Medical and physiological research into the process of human aging has found that disability, weakness, and disease are not inevitable in growing older. People who maintain a healthy lifestyle, choosing foods wisely, avoiding alcohol and tobacco use, keeping emotionally involved with others, and exercising - can forestall most of the disabilities traditionally associated with aging.
While you can lose a significant amount of weight by following a crash diet, most of the weight loss is muscle mass, glycogen stores and water, not excess body fat. There are other problems associated with crash diets, including electrolyte imbalances, calcium deficiency, iron deficiency and other vitamins and mineral deficiencies. The fastest and safest way to lose excess body fat is through a combination of diet and exercise. For example, if you eat 500 calories less per day and burn 500 calories more per day through exercise, by the end of one week, you can expect to lose two pounds.
