HEALTH PROBLEMS LINKED WITH OBESITY

67% of Americans are overweight. Health problems linked with obesity are:

1. Cardiovascular disease including high blood pressure
2. Osteoarthritis and osteoporosis
3. Diabetes
4. Infertility
5. Varicose Veins

Physiological Causes of Obesity

1. Glandular disturbances – such as underactive thyroid glands
2. Hereditary factors
3. Metabolic abnormalities
4. Digestive disorders including food allergies
5. Underactive adrenal glands due to long term stress
6. Mineral deficiency

Psychological Problems Related to Obesity

1. Social or emotional stress
2. Eating disorders
3. Low self esteem and depression

Note: Being overweight is generally associated with having a reduced metabolic rate. A slowing down of metabolism can be caused by age, nutritional deficiencies, thyroid problems and a reduction in physical activity.

Factors that may help increase metabolism and weight loss

1. Regular exercise
2. Consume regular meals. Do not skip meals. Skipping meals will Only slow down your metabolism.
3. Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. The more active you are the More water you need.
4. Meals should consist of complex carbohydrates, fruits and vegetables, Protein and healthy fats.
Complex Carbs: Brown rice, oatmeal, potatoes, whole grains
Protein: Fish, lean pieces of chicken, beans, lean pieces of red meat Healthy Fats: Avocados, Olive oil, Flaxseeds, Oily fishes, e.g. Salmon, Mackerel, Sardines

Note: It is recommended that if you eat red meat, that you do not Eat it more than twice a week. Too much red meat in your diet Has been associated with colon, pancreas, breast and prostate cancer

Never skip breakfast. Breakfast is your most important meal. It helps to jumpstart your metabolism in the morning.

Eliminate processed foods. Try to eat as natural as possible.

If you are a vegetarian, good sources of protein are: Tofu, Brown rice, Beans, Whole grains, Lentil beans, Chick peas. Protein needs are automatically met by a balanced varied diet. There is even protein in potatoes.
